The Governor of Jammu and Kashmir Manoj Singh will be the chief guest of the Shankar Dayal Singh Lecture Series 2024 program on December 27.

The Governor of Jammu and Kashmir is arriving as the chief guest in the Dr. Shankar Dayal Singh Lecture Series program on December 27, 2024 at the Auditorium NDMC Convention Center New Delhi and the keynote speaker will be Swami Chidanand Saraswati.

It is noteworthy that Dr. Shankar Dayal Singh (27 December 1937 - 27 December 1995) was equally popular in both politics and literature. He will always be remembered for his extraordinary service to Hindi.

Born on 27 December 1937 in Bhawanipur village of Aurangabad district of Bihar to the famous freedom fighter, litterateur and member of Bihar Legislative Council, Late Kamta Prasad Singh, the parents of the child considered it to be the prasad of the mercy of their idol Dev Shankar and named him Shankar Dayal.

After completing his graduation (BA) from Banaras Hindu University and post graduation (MA) from Patna University, he became a member of All India Congress Committee in 1966 and was elected as MP in 1971. One foot in the sun of politics and the other in the shadow of literature. His wife was a polite professor like Mrs. Kanan Bala, two sons - Ranjan and Rajesh and a daughter - Rashmi. Starting from the post of Director of Samachar Bharati, Shankar Dayal Singh's life journey crossed many stages like Parliamentary Official Language Committee, Delhi Public Library, Indian Railway Advisory Committee, Indian Translation Council, Central Hindi Advisory Committee. Shankar Dayal Singh was a member of both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. Since he was basically a litterateur, Shankar Dayal Singh continued to introduce his readers to various countries and places through his travel articles. Reading the accounts of his important journeys from Moscow, the capital of the Soviet Union, to Suriname and Trinidad, we do not feel that Shankar Dayal Singh is no longer amongst us. Shankar Dayal Singh struggled throughout his life for the national language Hindi. He was awarded the Anant Gopal Sevde Hindi Samman for his services to Hindi in 1993 and the Gadgil National Award in 1995. Apart from this, he received many awards from many institutions, organizations and state governments of India. The Janbhasha Samman is given in the memory of Shankar Dayal Singh. Under this, a prize of Rs 1 lakh has been given to various institutions / individuals so far. In the same sequence, a fellowship has been started in the name of Dr. Shankar Dayal Singh in Banaras Hindu University (BHU). The Bihar government has named an important road in Shankar Dayal Singh's hometown Dev, District Aurangabad (Bihar) in his memory. The road starting from Dev Mor on National Highway-2 to Bhawanipur village is known as Dr. Shankar Dayal Singh Path. This road goes up to the Sun Temple located at Agedev, where a big fair is held twice a year on the occasion of Chhath. Bhawanipur village, which is located in Dev Block, is the birthplace of Shankar Dayal Singh ji. He spent his childhood here. The Ministry of Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises of the Government of India is also giving the Shankar Dayal Singh Rajbhasha Award to encourage the use of official language in public enterprises across the country. It is worth mentioning that Shankar Dayal Singh ji, as the Convenor of the Third Sub-Committee of the Parliamentary Official Language Committee and then as the Vice-Chairman of the Parliamentary Official Language Committee, was very diligent about the use of official language in these institutions. This award is given every year on Hindi Diwas to a public enterprise for the best contribution in the field of official language.

He died of cardiac arrest while travelling from Patna to New Delhi at Tundla railway station in the early hours of 27 December 1995.

After his sudden death on 26 November 1995, a series of lectures was started in his memory, which has been organised every year since 1995 on his birthday (27 December).
