Unauthorised intrusion by Rahul Gandhi in DUSU office an attack on democracy

Mahesh Dhoundiyal - Delhi

Supporters of Rahul Gandhi prevent DUSU Secretary Mitravinda Karanwal from entering her own office: a severe blot on student rights

Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad on Friday held a Press Conference at Delhi University Student's Union office highlighting Rahul Gandhi's unauthorised and unannounced entry in the Delhi University campus. This not only undermines the dignity of the university but also directly hampers student safety, democratic norms and the academic environment.

This is not the first time Rahul Gandhi has disregarded the decorum and regulations of the university. He had previously entered PG Men's Hostel without authorisation, attempting political promotion while disrespecting the privacy and safety of students. His repeated use of university campuses for political agenda is deeply concerning.

Locking the Student's Union Office and Misbehaving with a student representative: A direct attack on democracy.

DUSU office, a base for democratically elected representatives serving lakhs of students was forcibly locked and disturbed by Rahul Gandhi's supporters and outsiders. This act was not just physical locking of door but a symbolic attempt of silencing of the student voice, autonomy and trust. This is the same office where student issues are addressed, voices are heard and dialogue with administration is established.

More questionable was the treatment with the elected DUSU Secretary Mitravinda Karanwal who was not only denied entry to her own office but was physically pushed, verbally abused and obstructed from fulling her duties. During the examination season, several students had approached the office with concerns only to be intimidated and locked inside. This entire episode must be viewed as a premeditated political conspiracy against the spirit of democracy, decorum and student welfare within Delhi University.

The incident occured during the ongoing university examinations.  Many students had come to the DUSU Secretary with their issues but were threated and also forcibly locked inside the office. This is not just an attack on student union representatives but on every student who seeks a peaceful, safe and democratic environment.

Rahul Gandhi avoids questions on Armed forces, flees from campus when challenged by student.

In another development, while India successfully conducted Operation Sindoor in response to the Pahalgam terror attack, Congress leaders repeatedly questioned the valor of Indian armed forces. Rahul Gandhi's continuous skepticism towards the military operations for political mileage is deeply unfortunate.

When Delhi University students demaned answers from Rahul Gandhi regarding these nationl issues, he evaded the questions and fled from the campus. His ignorance from dialogue reveals his unwillingness to be held accountable. A leader who claims to represent the youth should not be afraid of addressing to student's questions.

ABVP'S Protest and University Administration's Acknowledgement.

In protest against the intrusion by outsiders into DUSU's office, misconduct towards elected representatives and suspected substance abuse, ABVP staged a strong protest at the proctor's office.

Following the protest, the university administration acknowledged the serious nature of the incident, recognising unauthorised entry, office lockdown and harassment of elected student representatives as acts of indiscipline. The administration assured an appropriate investigation and action.

Delhi University Students’ Union Secretary Mitravinda Karanwal stated, "The student union office is the platform where student representatives communicate student issues to the administration, engage in dialogue for solutions and protect their rights. The way an elected secretary was denied entry to her office, mistreated, and obstructed is not just a personal insult, but a direct affront to the vote, franchise, and democratic dignity of the entire student community. It seems that the Congress family lives under a delusion that Delhi University is their personal property where they can enter at will, lock doors and marginalise institutions like the Union Office. We want to state it very clearly, this university is driven by student aspirations, efforts and rights not by dynastical privileges. The DUSU office is not a stage for political drama but a site of service and responsibility toward student welfare and any attempt to hamper it is not only condemnable but a direct violation of students’ democratic rights, which we will resist at every level.”

ABVP National Secretary Shivangi Kharwal stated, "The chaos and insensitivity created in Delhi University by Congress and Rahul Gandhi is deeply condemnable. Forcibly locking the student union office, intimidating students, and using national security as a tool for misleading politics reflect Congress's true mindset. Rahul Gandhi is a leader whose statements are often used by Pakistan for propaganda on international platforms. ABVP strongly opposes such attempts and will ensure that the university does not become a battleground for political agendas. "
