NDMC to Expand Night Sweeping Model to 12 More Markets and NDMC Housing Complexes in the Next Three Months

Mechanical Sweepers and Jet Washing Technology Introduced for Deep Cleaning

In alignment with the vision of Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi Ji to modernize urban infrastructure and enhance public amenities—under the broader national goal of Viksit Bharat @2047—Shri Kuljeet Singh Chahal, Vice Chairperson of the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC), led an intensive Night Wet Cleaning Drive at Janpath Market on the night of April 17, 2025. The initiative builds upon the successful rollout at Khan Market, launched on November 22, 2024.

Shri Chahal shared that the cleaning operation, conducted between 10:00 p.m. and 1:00 a.m., represents a major stride in creating a cleaner, more vibrant, and future-ready New Delhi. The drive saw active participation from NDMC officials—including Heads of Departments (HODs) from Civil and Health departments—as well as ground-level staff and representatives of the Janpath Market Traders’ Association.

“This initiative reflects the essence of ‘Viksit NDMC’ as part of Viksit Bharat @2047, envisioned by our Hon’ble Prime Minister. It’s not just about cleaning; it’s about reimagining our markets as clean, safe, and efficient public spaces,” said Shri Chahal.

He emphasized that this deep-cleaning model—featuring mechanical sweepers and jet-washing technology—will soon be implemented in 12 more prominent markets including Sarojini Nagar, Connaught Place, Pandara Road, Begum Zaidi, Basurkar Market, Malcha Marg, Gole Market, Baird Lane Market, Bengali Market, Khanna Market, Jor Bagh Market, Shankar Market, Safdarjung Hospital, AIIMS, Yusufsarai Market, Ring Road, and Nauroji Nagar Market. "Shri Chahal mentioned that the same initiative will be extended to all NDMC Housing Complexes in collaboration with Residential Welfare Associations and residents, ensuring greater visibility and participation in maintaining cleanliness in their surroundings."

Describing Janpath Market as a “dream shopping destination,” he praised its vibrant character and rich mix of trendy fashion, handicrafts, and souvenirs—an essential part of Delhi’s cultural and commercial identity. “A team of 10 Safai Sevaks and 1 supervisor carried out this operation as part of our structured Night Cleaning Framework, which includes: Scheduled Night Operations, Deployment of Dedicated Manpower, Advanced Equipment Utilization, and Continuous Monitoring,” Shri Chahal said. “This will not only raise NDMC’s cleanliness standards but will also contribute to Delhi’s performance in the upcoming Swachhata Survey.”

He highlighted that NDMC is the first municipal body in Delhi to initiate such an intensive night cleaning mechanism for its marketplaces, setting a precedent for other civic agencies to emulate. The deployment of additional sanitation staff is aimed at ensuring sustainability and consistency in cleanliness efforts.

Shri Chahal urged residents, traders, and visitors to embrace cleanliness as a shared civic responsibility: “Cleanliness must become a habit. A clean New Delhi requires the collective effort of the community. Let’s come together to build a Viksit, Swachh, and Smart Capital.”

In conclusion, Shri Chahal reaffirmed NDMC’s dedication to realizing the Hon’ble Prime Minister’s vision of Viksit Bharat @2047 by building sustainable, inclusive, and high-quality urban experiences.

“We are fully committed to transforming NDMC into a model of urban excellence—Viksit NDMC, where clean, smart, and citizen-friendly services define the quality of life,” he said.

The Janpath Market Traders’ Association expressed gratitude to NDMC for this initiative and noted that such efforts significantly improve both the shopping experience and the working environment.
