Deven Bharti Takes Helm as Mumbai's New Police Commissioner

Deven Bharti, a seasoned 1994-batch IPS officer, has been appointed as the new Commissioner of Mumbai Police, marking a new chapter in the city's law enforcement. He succeeds Vivek Phansalkar, who retired on April 30, 2025, after dedicating 35 years to the force. Bharti's extensive experience and expertise make him an ideal candidate to lead the Mumbai Police.

Bharti's career is marked by notable achievements and diverse roles. He has served the 50,000-strong Mumbai Police force in various capacities, including Joint Commissioner of Police (Law and Order), Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime), and Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime).

In his long career, Bharti has headed the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) and served as Inspector General of Police (Law and Order) at the state police headquarters. He has also served on central deputation, broadening his expertise. Bharti demonstrated exceptional investigative skills, handling high-profile cases, including the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack that claimed 166 lives.

Bharti's appointment as Mumbai Police Commissioner comes with the post being downgraded to the rank of Additional Director General of Police (ADGP). His trusted relationship with Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, forged during his first term as CM, further solidifies his leadership position. With his wealth of experience and expertise, Bharti is well-equipped to lead the Mumbai Police force, ensuring the city's safety and security.
