Samrat Ashok Subharti Department of Buddhist Studies plays an important role in preserving the rich cultural heritage of India: Major General Dr. G.K. Thapliyal Vice Chancellor

Samrat Ashok Subharti Department of Buddhist Studies (Tathagata Buddha Shodhpeeth), Swami Vivekananda Subharti University, Meerut inaugurated three Pali-based courses with the aim of reviving and promoting ancient Indian knowledge tradition and Buddhist education. The inaugural program began with the lighting of the lamp in front of the statue of Lord Buddha, a symbol of wisdom and compassion.

On this occasion, Dr. Mukesh Mehta, Assistant Professor, Samrat Ashok Subharti Department of Buddhist Studies (Tathagata Buddha Shodhpeeth) delivered the welcome address.

The three newly launched courses are- M.A. in Pali (2025-2026): A comprehensive postgraduate program, Six-monthly Pali Language Certificate Course: Aimed at imparting basic knowledge of Pali, Six-monthly Vipassana Meditation Certificate Course: Focused on personal development and mindfulness.

The keynote address was delivered by Dr. Anirban Ganguly, Chairman, Dr. Syama Prasad Mukherjee Research Foundation, wherein he emphasised on the historical and modern relevance of the Pali language and how Pali provides invaluable knowledge for various fields including literature, science and medical-research.

Bharatiya Janata Party National General Secretary Matrun Chugh delivered a thought-provoking speech which touched a chord with the audience. He highlighted Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s unwavering commitment to promote India’s cultural heritage and its role as a global teacher (Vishwa Guru). He emphasised on how India under PM Modi’s leadership has been instrumental in disseminating the timeless teachings of the Buddha across the world.

Venerable Bhikshu Dr. Kachayan Shramana, General Secretary, Buddha Triratna Mission spoke on the important role of the Pali language and Vipassana Meditation in education and self-development and underlined their relevance in addressing modern challenges.

Major General Dr. G.K. Singh, Vice Chancellor, University Thapliyal said in his presidential address that the Emperor Ashoka Subharti Department of Buddhist Studies has an important role in taking farsighted steps in preserving India's rich cultural heritage.

He highlighted the antiquity of the Pali language and its relevance in the present times.

Dr. Hero Hito, Advisor, Emperor Ashoka Subharti Department of Buddhist Studies, expressed gratitude to the distinguished guests, participants and audience for their presence and support.

University Public Relations Officer Anam Sherwani told Bureau Chief Vijay Gaur that about 500 attendees participated in the program, which included students, researchers and teachers from various departments of the university. International participants from countries like Burma, Myanmar, Cambodia and Taiwan added a global dimension to the program.
