Ahmedabad’s Sarangpur Bridge Reconstruction: A Major Infrastructure Revamp Plan

Ahmedabad’s iconic Sarangpur Bridge, an 83-year-old structure, is set for a major reconstruction to address its deteriorating condition and ensure smoother traffic flow. The bridge, which plays a crucial role in connecting the city, has recently faced safety concerns due to potholes and structural damage, causing significant inconvenience to commuters.

Current Situation:

• Multiple potholes have developed on Sarangpur Bridge, leading to slowed traffic and increased risk for commuters.
• Complaints from daily travelers and vehicle drivers have highlighted the urgency of repairs.
• The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has prioritized the bridge’s redevelopment to enhance safety and functionality.

Redevelopment Plan:

• A budget of ?439 crore has been allocated by AMC for the redevelopment of Sarangpur Bridge, along with the 108-year-old Kalupur Bridge.
• The reconstruction will incorporate modern technology and designs, ensuring the bridges can handle increased traffic loads for decades to come.
• Both bridges will be strengthened to improve their structural integrity and longevity.

Timeline and Impact:

• Reconstruction work will begin on January 2, 2025, and is expected to conclude by June 30, 2026.
• During this period, Sarangpur Bridge will remain completely closed to traffic.

Alternate Routes:

To mitigate traffic disruptions, the following alternative routes have been designated:

1. For commuters from Geeta Mandir, Gandhi Road, Khadia, and surrounding areas:
   • Use routes via Kagdapith Police Station, Vanijya Bhavan, Anupam/Ambika Bridge, Apparel Park, and Anupam Cinema.
2. For commuters heading from Geeta Mandir or the city towards Kalupur Circle:
   • Use Moti Mahal Hotel Road towards Kalupur Circle.
3. For traffic from Rakhial and Odhav towards Sarangpur Bridge:
   • Use Rakhial Cross Road, New Cotton Cross Road, Anupam Cinema, Ambika Bridge, and Kankaria Geeta Mandir Road.
4. For traffic heading from Rakhial and Odhav towards Kalupur Circle or Kalupur Bridge:
   • Use Kamdar Maidan via Chartoda Kabristan and Saraspur Gurudwara to reach Kalupur Bridge.

The redevelopment of Sarangpur Bridge marks a significant step toward modernizing Ahmedabad’s infrastructure. Once completed, the revamped bridge will ease traffic congestion, improve commuter safety, and contribute to the development of the city’s heritage areas.

The authorities urge citizens to cooperate during this reconstruction period by utilizing the designated alternate routes and adhering to traffic regulations.
