Safdarjung Hospital Now Providing Insulin Pens and Glucometers to Type 1 Diabetic Children.

Mahesh Dhoundiyal | Delhi.

The Department of Pediatrics at VMMC & Safdarjung Hospital (SJH) has begun providing insulin pens, glucometers, and glucose monitoring strips to children with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus. This initiative is guided by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and Medical Superintendent Dr. Vandana Talwar.

The hospital's Pediatric Endocrinology clinic serves 350-400 diabetic children regularly and admits 8-10 newly diagnosed cases monthly. Traditional syringe-based insulin administration, required 4-5 times daily, can be painful and cause complications like lipodystrophy. Insulin pens offer a safer, less painful alternative, improving treatment adherence and reducing complications.

This advancement results from efforts by the hospital administration team, including Dr. Vandana Talwar, Dr. Jayanthi Mani, & Pediatrics HOD Dr. Ratan Gupta. The dedicated pediatric endocrinology clinic, developed by Dr. K.R. Meena and Dr. Bhavna Anand, has progressed from providing free insulin injections to now offering modern insulin delivery devices.

The department expressed gratitude to the ministry and hospital administration for their support in enhancing care for children with Type 1 diabetes.
